Tips for freshers

Explore what you would want to pursue after your graduation.  In the first year, there is ample time to explore different paths. If you are interested in  branch change , then focusing solely on it might be a good option too. CPI matters a lot.  You should have a CPI of at least 8. Whatever happens, you should not let it go below 8, and in the worse case below 7. It's not like this should be your goal for the four years here, but just that you should maintain a good CPI, it helps you a LOT. Attend classes and tutorials.  It becomes a lot easier to get a good CPI if you are regular to classes. Sometimes a professor may suddenly fail students having attendance below 75% to create an example for the future batches, so it's always better to attend classes even after knowing professors past behavior. Before coming to IIT Guwahati

Reaching Guwahati:

Guwahati is well connected by road, rail and air. Trains from all parts of the country are available to reach Guwahati (Visit the Indian Railways Official website). There are direct flights from Delhi, Kolkata and Mumbai. There are direct or connecting flights from Jaipur, Chennai, Hyderabad, Bengaluru to Guwahati via Kolkata / Delhi.
National Highway 31 connects Guwahati with states of West Bengal, Bihar and Jharkhand. National Highway 37 connects Guwahati with other major cities of Assam.
Guwahati is very well connected with adjoining regions via bus services. Three Bus terminus points, Adabari, Paltan Bazar and ISBT Guwahati, provide bus services to towns and cities in Assam and adjoining states. Some of these services are run by the government agency ASTC, and majority of them are run by private companies. 

Upon Reaching Guwahati:


From Guwahati Railway Station (GHY):

The distance from Guwahati Railway Station (GHY) to IIT Guwahati is about 18 kms. If you are arriving at Guwahati Railway Station by rail, come out through Platform No.1 exit gate (Panbazar or Lakhhtokia side). A limited number of IIT buses run regularly from Guwahati city - Lakhtokia (Near Don Bosco School's Church/ Cotton College Boys Hostel, which is about 0.5 km from the Guwahati Railway Station) to IIT Campus. Click here to know details for the direction and taking institute bus at Lakhtokia which is 0.5 km from Guwahati Railway Station.
For commuting from Guwahati Railway Station to IIT Guwahati, taxis and auto-rickshaws are available. Call taxis/ Radio taxis like Prime Cabs (Phone No.: 0361- 2222233), My Taxi (Phone No.: 0361- 2228888), Green Cab - Tata Nano Small Car (Phone No.: 0361-7151515), etc are available.

From Kamakhya Railway Station (KYQ):

The distance from Kamakhya Railway Station (KYQ) to IIT Guwahati is about 13 kms. For commuting from Kamakya Railway Station, you may have to hire taxi or auto-rickshaws.


From Guwahati Airport (GAU):

The distance from Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport - Guwahati (GAU) to IIT Guwahati is about 22 kms. In the Arrival Lounge (inside Airport), there is a pre-paid taxi counter. You can take a prepaid taxi from the airport to reach IIT Guwahati campus. The normal rate for taxi from Airport to IIT is around Rs.500/- (Maximum is Rs.550/-). Call taxis/ Radio taxis like Prime Cabs (Phone No.: 0361- 2222233), My Taxi (Phone No.: 0361- 2228888) are also available. 

On arriving in the Campus:

If you arrive by hired vehicles, the driver needs to make entry at the entrance gate. You may check the hostel allotment details which are available at security desks at entry gates. Proceed directly to the allotted hostel and contact the hostel care-taker at the hostel office for accommodation. If you are arriving at late hours, then contact security persons at the hostels or students volunteers available at the hostel offices for accommodation. In case of any difficulties, you can contact the Warden/ Associate Warden of your hostel. Please note that the allocation of hostel is fixed and any requests for change of allocated hostel will not be entertained. 

The complete details of all activities on the day of registration and orientation will be displayed on the notice boards in the Hostels and the Institute. Please see the notices and follow the instructions given therein. Student volunteers will render whatever help is required to you during the registration and orientation programme. 
Important Note: Parents/ Guardians are not allowed to stay with their wards in the hostels. They may need to make their own arrangements. For your convenience, Click here to see a brief list of hotels in Guwahati.  
For the parents, accommodation can be booked in the institute guest house by mailing an application to guesthouse@iitg.ernet.in specifying the duration of stay, number of people visiting and the reason for visit.

Since the number of rooms in the Guest House is limited (they have a first-come first-serve policy) you will be at an advantage if you book your rooms as soon as possible. I suggest mailing them immediately. The response confirming your booking should come within 1-2 weeks.

Packing your Bags

Learning to pack well is one the first lessons of hostel life. Here are few essentials that you must bring with you: 
Bring all Original Certificates and Documents along with at least Two Sets of Photocopies of them. 
  • Pass/Degree Certificates and Marks Sheets/ Grade Cards: Starting from 10th Class onward - upto Qualifying Degree/Exam
  • Birth Certificate (for Date of Birth)
  • Admit Card, Score Card for Qualifying in JEE(Main) & JEE(Advanced)/ UCEED/ JAM/ GATE/ CEED/ NET/ INSPIRE/ NBHM-RF - if applicable
  • Admission Offer Letter* issued by JEE(Advanced)2016 / JAM2016/ UCEED2016 / IIT Guwahati
  • In case of OBC(NCL) category students, OBC-Non Creamy Layer Certificate in prescribed format issued on or after 01.04.2015
  • In case of SC/ST category students, Caste Certificate in prescribed format
  • In case of PwD category students, Physical Disability Certificate in prescribed format
  • For all New Students: Medical Certificate/ Report on your Physical Fitness in prescribed format
  • For B.Tech./B.Des. Students: All documents as prescribed by JEE (Advanced)/UCEED and IITG. For those having family income less than 5 lakhs in the last Financial Year: Family Annual Income Certificate for the financial year of April 1, 2015 to March 31, 2016 issued by the competent authority (District Magistrate/ Revenue Officer / Tehsildar)
  • For M.Sc. Students: All documents as prescribed by JAM-2016 and IITG
  • For Sponsored/ Project Staff / Part-Time Category students: Relevant certificates/documents (Work experience certificate, No objection certificate, etc) from sponsoring organization
  • Original proof of payment of Fee / Seat Reservation Fee/ Seat Booking Fee (Offers of Last Round of Admission may have to pay full fee on the Day of Registration at IITG)
  • Balance amount of fee (if applicable) in Demand Draft (in favour of Registrar, IIT Guwahati payable at Guwahati) or in Cash to pay on the Day of Registration at IIT Guwahati
  • Your Color Passport Size and Stamp Size Photographs with white background (at least 12 numbers each)
  • Other essential things for your Hostel Life (as mentioned below - See Settling Down in the Campus)

* For MTech/MDes/MS(R)/MA/PhD students, the admission offer letters are/ will be despatched by the Academic Affairs Section, IIT Guwahati and it will be also uploaded. If you did not receive the admission offer letter sent by IITG by post, then don't worry and see sample copy at the webpage & come for registration.

In the institute hospital medical record book and student's identity card issued by the institute, the student's blood group and type will be mentioned. So, each student should know his/her blood group and type. You must bring the medical Certificate/ Report in prescribed format at the time of registration. 

Settling Down in the Campus:

IIT Guwahati Campus has bank branches of Canara Bank (IFSC: CNRB0008652, MICR Code: 781015008), State Bank of India (IFSC: SBIN0014262, MICR Code: 781002053) at the basement of Administrative Building and ICICI bank (IFSC: ICIC0003325 at Market Complex.
The Campus has stationery shops at Academic Complex, Market Complex and at some Hostels. 
Most of the essential things are available in the campus or in the Guwahati city. However, in addition to your clothings/ dresses, you are advised to bring pillow covers, bedsheets, curtains ( click here for window size ), alarm clock, 2 locks, umbrella/ raincoat, nail cutter, toiletries & grooming kits, hangers, slippers, sports shoes, non-marking shoes (if you wish to play indoor games), pair of shorts/track pants (sports wear), your personal sports & swimming gears (if you wish), scientific calculator (if you have already one), mobile phone & its charger, ear/headphone, Power extension Board Spike Guard, etc from your home. 
The institute will arrange for temporary stalls inside campus to facilitate students to buy essential things like mattress, pillows, water buckets, mugs, bi-cycles, etc during July 20-28, 2016. 
Amongst other things you will probably require a mobile phone connection and may need to open a bank account in the campus. The Institute will arrange for counters by banks and stalls by mobile phone connections providers during this period inside campus. 

Guwahati experiences rainy & humid climate in July & August and moderate winter climate in December & January. So, you can bring your winter clothings and quilt during your trip to home in December vacation.

Reach IIT Guwahati latest by evening of July 24, 2016 (Sunday) - Previous day to the Registration Day.

Institute Level Orientation for new students of B.Tech. programme is scheduled as per following details:
  • Date: July 26, 2016 (Tuesday)
  • Venue: Dr. Bhupen Hazarika Auditorium, IIT Guwahati
  • Time: 10:00 am

Department Level Orientation for new students of B.Tech. programme is scheduled as per following details:
  • Date: July 26 or 27, 2016
  • Venue: As announced by the concerned Academic Department
