Tips for freshers

  1. Explore what you would want to pursue after your graduation. In the first year, there is ample time to explore different paths. If you are interested in branch change, then focusing solely on it might be a good option too.
  2. CPI matters a lot. You should have a CPI of at least 8. Whatever happens, you should not let it go below 8, and in the worse case below 7. It's not like this should be your goal for the four years here, but just that you should maintain a good CPI, it helps you a LOT.
  3. Attend classes and tutorials. It becomes a lot easier to get a good CPI if you are regular to classes. Sometimes a professor may suddenly fail students having attendance below 75% to create an example for the future batches, so it's always better to attend classes even after knowing professors past behavior.
  4. Play a sport or join a club or one of the fests. Explore different clubs but join only one, this is my opinion, you are free to decide for yourself. Join a fest, if you like it, then continue, don’t do it for the sake of POR, same applies for clubs. If you are genuinely interested in that field then only take those PORs.
  5. Choose your friends carefully. You will get a chance to make lifelong friends here, so choose carefully who you call a friend. Interact with batchmates who have common interests. Having friends who have similar ideologies will help you a lot, and it is often that they turn out to be your long-term friends.
  6. Interact with the right seniors and respect them for what they have experienced. Respecting the seniors and even batch mates would take you a long way. Each one has a different experience and you will get a chance to learn a plethora of things from them.
  7. Never ever argue or show disrespect to a professor. Healthy discussions are good, but never let the professor think that you are undermining him or her. This would only bring bad will towards you, so stay away from doing this.
  8. There is never a first time. Don’t indulge in addictive substances, not even for once. They don’t do any good to you and you don’t remain yourself. Remember till the end of four years that someone someday told you this. There is mostly no coming back from it, it becomes a part of you.
  9. It's never too late. It is always the right time to start, your friends may have started pursuing their goals early on, but that does not mean you are late. Everyone starts according to themselves. And never get depressed because of this. Just start, and you will find yourself way ahead of everyone.
  10. Travel, being in the north-east there are various places to visit, which you might have not visited before. The first year is when you and all your friends would be free together, so make the most of it. But remember to keep safe and not to act over smart in front of friends, north-east has a wide variety of terrain be it a river or a valley, that often needs to be approached with caution.
  11. Finally remember, now you are a part of this institution so any action taken by you represents all of us here. There are many who have worked hard to get the reputation of IIT G to where it is today, be the person to take it up and not the other way round.

    Be proud to be here.
    Have confidence in yourself.
    Enjoy your four years here.
