Tips for freshers

Explore what you would want to pursue after your graduation.  In the first year, there is ample time to explore different paths. If you are interested in  branch change , then focusing solely on it might be a good option too. CPI matters a lot.  You should have a CPI of at least 8. Whatever happens, you should not let it go below 8, and in the worse case below 7. It's not like this should be your goal for the four years here, but just that you should maintain a good CPI, it helps you a LOT. Attend classes and tutorials.  It becomes a lot easier to get a good CPI if you are regular to classes. Sometimes a professor may suddenly fail students having attendance below 75% to create an example for the future batches, so it's always better to attend classes even after knowing professors past behavior. Play a sport or join a club or one of the fests . Explore different clubs but join only one, this is my opinion, you are free to decide for yourself. Join a fest, if you like it, t

Summer Internships

An internship is an experience of what the future holds for you, it is one chance of knowing what you are going into. In corporate, it gives you an insight into the company culture, quality of employees, work-life balance, presentation and communication skills and so on. Most importantly it allows you to understand what kind of work is currently being done in the industry. Corporates lag behind the academic developments. There are many things that students venture in their college life like Machine Learning and Big Data that have still not been extensively applied in the industry. It is often hard to find work in these new regions as they are still taking time to penetrate the industry applications. Most often new academic research is applied by startups, it is best to look for opportunity in them if you are interested in that. Coming to the internship season of IIT Guwahati. The internship season is for pre-final year students only. It starts from the month of August and the co

Sophomore summer internship

Image
I interned for two months during summer ‘17 in a startup called Logic Square Technologies in Kolkata. There were two reasons why this internship attracted me, first of, I wanted to do the internship while staying at my home city and at the same time having the experience of working at an office. Second is of course the stipend. This was one of the highest paying internships in Kolkata in software development. I applied around March through Internshala. I had to make a CV in Internshala itself and answer a few questions set by the startup. Once that was done, I received an email regarding an on-call interview to be held with the startup’s co-founder. I was asked about the work I had done in open-source and basics about Django and JavaScript. Then he asked me to code some simple programs in any language I was comfortable with, using one of the live screen sharing sites. After a couple of hours, I received a small project to be done in any react framework. I chose VueJS be

Comparing different colleges.

This is the general order of colleges:   IIT-Bombay, Delhi, Kanpur, Kharagpur, Madras - These are the five oldest iits. All of them were established between 1950s to 1960s. They have a wide network of Alumni. And finally they have their own charm. Every college ranking has either of these institutes starting their list. There is clearly no way you can compare these five institutes. The rankings take into account only some of the things and grade the institute on basis of that. So it’s clearly on you (your own priorities) to decide which one of these will be better for you.   IIT-Guwahati, Roorkee- Guwahati was established in 1994 and Roorkee was converted into an iit in 2001(Established in 1847). Both the institutes are doing well and have an amazing campus.   IIT-BHU - Converted to iit in 2008 and was established in 1919. The following colleges can have a different order based on your preferences: ·          BITS Pilani, Goa, and Hyderabad – One of the best private insti

How is this branch?

I can’t answer this question. How good is a branch can only be decided by your interests. But if you are open to everything here is a glimpse of the four years out of that branch. Computer Science and Engineering - The most sought after branch. Nobody wants to know anything about this, if they get it, they take it, as simple as that. The course syllabi of every semester- http://iitg.ernet.in/acad/CourseStructure/cseUG2013onwards.htm Mathematics and Computing - This is a 21 st century branch. It is a mixture of Maths, computer and a pinch of economics. It has academic pressure because of the Mathematics part. Placements are usually directed towards the Finance or Consulting corporations. Small batch of students, about 45. If you are quite doubtful about your Mathematics, its better if you take a look at other options. How is the campus and facilities?

Image
The campus is one of the best in India . It is an amazing peaceful place. Lovely weather. It rains quite often here, one thing you will start loving from beginning. If you are lucky you might get to witness a hailstorm. Everyone at IIT G get's a single seater room. There are ten boys hostel and 2 girls hostel. Hostels will be allotted randomly to fresher’s, which can be changed from 2 nd year if you want. All the hostels have washing machines. Water coolers are on every floor in a hostel. Some hostels have Balcony and those which don’t have one is compensated by more space inside the room (The newer hostels don’t have a Balcony). There is a small Library and a TV room in each hostel. The TV room gets crowded during the cricket and football World cups. There is a stationery shop in each hostel with the facility for printouts and photocopying, where you can find everything you need to buy. And then you have the Khokha market where you can find the rest of the stuff, its
